Can anyone help me with a patent application - I have a great idea and want to protect it while I make a prototype.

I would not try to submit it all by myself. There are too many difficult pieces such as:

1. Writing the specification figures, and claims. There is a right way to write the claims to cover your invention. If not done right you can improperly cover your idea.
2. Filing the proper paperwork. Doing it right and on time.
3. Effectively arguing your idea with a patent examiner. The examiner has a lot of experience in rejecting patents because someone already thought of the idea. Unless you have the same resources and experience it will be difficult to argue your idea.

The best way is to use a patent attorney. They can tell you if your idea is worthy of patenting and help you make the best case. There is a reason why they go to school for three years.

Go to the US Patent and Trademark website. It will walk you through all the forms and steps.

It is a confusing process. Which is why patent attorneys are paid so much.
