The US is adamant about spreading "democracy". Yet according to the definition, we are a republic, NOT a democracy. Does this make sense to anyone???

Democracy is the generalized philosophy "Of, by, and for the people." A Republic (actually a federal republic) is our specific form of government. We are more interested in spreading the general philosophy and allowing other countries to determine their own specific form of government.

In a world where communist countries called themselves "people's republic" the use of the word democracy didn't carry the connotations of "republic" and was much easier to use than "representative democracy".
This spread of "democracy" is used in contrast to localized theocracy or dictatorship. Is it that you do not understand this slight misuse? What is it that makes you so confused? Do you really believe that many people understand or care about the differences between the forms of representative government as compared to dangerous non-representative forms?

The present Republican administration justifies its meddling in the affairs of other countries by saying they are promoting democracy.
Deep thinking is hard for Republicans. Just remember that in a republic also the citizens get to vote. Their elected representatives pass the laws to set up the government and to regulate the government employees who execute the programs.
The US also said it was promoting democracy in Viet Nam.

we are a democratic republic. democratic means we can vote on stuff and republic means we have a represenative form of government. and the whole spread democracy is that compared to a theocracy (religious) and communism (group government) democracy seems to work the best.

Republics and Democracies are systems of government that are representative of the people. What the US is trying to eliminate is Tyranny and Dictatorships.

The reason we are spreading democracy to the these two countries we are involded in is because those people where sluaghtered, and some tourtered. They didn't get the freedom to practice he religion that they see fit them, and you can't allow a government to stay in power if they are killing many innocent people.

a republic is a representative democracy. democracy means rule by the people and by electing legislators to represent us that is what we are doing.

this country hasn't been a true Republic in a long time. All so the Confederate States are still an occupied country by the northern FEDERALIST.

Semantics.
What we are trying to spread are simply governments that answer to the people, rather than the other way around.
If we can achieve this goal, the world will be a much safer place for everyone.
