Paper chromatography is an analytical technique for separating and identifying compounds that are or can be colored, especially pigments. For colourless mixture, the paper is examined under UV light or sparayed with suitable chemicals, where different components will appear as spots on the paper.

Method of separating and identifying both coloured and colourless mixtures.
e.g. dyes in ink
Test mixture is applied onto the chromatography paper and a solvent is then allowed to pass over the paper. As the solvent does so, the components of the mixture travel along with it.
The solvent used depends on the substance to be separated
The components will travel at different rates over paper depending on:
their solubility in the solvent
how well the dyes adsorb on the chromatography paper
Generally, the more soluble the component is in the solvent and the less it adsorb onto the chromatography paper, the faster it would move with the solvent on the paper and hence the spot appears further up the paper

In order to be separated by paper chromatography, the compounds in a mixture must have differences in polarity. These differences can be slight or can be greater. The solvent can be chosen to achieve the best separation.
The compounds in the mixture do not have to be visible (coloured), since there are many dye/ chemical sprays that can help to visualize the compounds after separation.
