When your regular tank is full is overflows into the overflow tank.

An overflow tank catches the coolant that flows to it under normal expansion of coolant from heat as the engine warms up,when the engine cools again it sucks it back into radiator.

an over flow tank catches the over flow of fluid take the water for instance when it gets too hot it will blow into the over flow tank then when it cools down a bit it will pull the water back into the radiator this is why its important not to over fill the over flow bottle or jug . hope this answers your question
