I heard this somewhere that a lot of them were because they were at sea for long periods of time, and it seems to make sense to me. Is there any evidence backing up this theory?

No. Pirates were pretty much straight.

Being at sea for long periods of time and with no female companions on board a ship (women were considered bad luck on a ship during those times), they resorted to sodomizing new recruits (preferably young men who were physically weak and did not grow facial hair) as a means of sexual release.

Pirates are no different from the sexual perverts in maximum security prisons.

I guess that notion came about because of all the time spent at sea with mostly other men. And of course there's the way Johnny Depp played Cap'n Jack Swallow. But I don't know any factual evidence for it.
