The company I will be working for is very small and I will be doing other duties besides working with the network. I really was just looking for input from anyone so that I can be prepared when I walk in the first day.

Don't pretend you know more then you do, ask many many questions, and don't expect to master the job in 3 days. It literally takes 4 to 6 months to get to the point where you are semi- competent in what you are doing. Don't try to change the world on your first week. This will sound harsh, but just keep your mouth shut and watch and learn for at least a few weeks. Understanding the corporate culture and attitude and the business processes and how things work is just as important as good technical skills.

I just started a new IT job doing field service about 6 months ago. My main background being networking, and laptop/desktop repair. I learned real fast that 1, when I get a call, or a customer has a problem. NEVER assume you all ready know the answer. 95% of the time, the way the customer, or dispatcher in my case, describes the problem, it's completely wrong. And 2, just have patience. Like everyone else said, don't try and fix everything and change the world, 1 thing at a time.

hmmm i had a IT job for a large college and the number one thing i learned the first day was to not assume your trusted being a IT you'll have keys to everywhere and you'll have to earn your trust. just keep your status as a IT up and since the company's small it May grow larger and you could be in a good postion if you do your job and do it well. just remember CAT5E always runs under your feet and above your head. Its the RJ45's you gotta worry about!

Start you first couple of days by learning the envio

find out ways to make it better but do not start implementing it rightaway

start with that is available, wht is required and what is not

People will lookup on you for every small things. not only for their conenctivity but also for their problems related to applications.

Find out the black sheep if any, they help you learn a lot from wht they do.

Enjoy you work

cheers !!!!
