why did you decide to major in math? do you think that the ability to succeed as a math major is innate...or can anyone with a reasonably high level of intelligence do well in it if they have the desire to work hard? i am just wondering because i am considering going back to university and i remember liking my math classes, even though i didn't do well in them because i was un-motivated. but now that i'm more motivated to go back to school and work hard, i'm wondering if math is for me. i really want to succeed at whatever i do! how do i know if i will succeed in math?

I study Applied Math and I really like it. It's not as abstract as Pure Math, but can still get pretty messy sometimes. If you really love it, then you'll study hard and you'll do well. Just remember, math isn't just stuff that's done with a pen and paper - a LOT of it is computer based and you may have to learn computer programming and all sorts of math software. So if that is a turn-off to you, then you might want to reconsider or maybe just take a few math courses before deciding to pursue a degree in it.

nope, i didn't major in math. though i finish an engineering degree and my course was one that was loaded with math (think most engineers would agree that it has the most math in it).

thing is, if you didn't too well in school back then, though you like the subject, i don't think it would be cut out nor appropriate for you. coz you get easily distrated and lose interest / motivation once you receive unsatisfactory grade... there are many courses where math abounds - engineering, accounting, even economics. the level of math varies with each course and fun too coz other subjects are included thus varying your interest, developing skills on other subjects, acquiring technical skills, adaptability to trends.... there's such subject as spherical geometry in engineering, are you ready for it? simple math operations in taxation in accounting, linear equations in economics.... truth is, find you real strength. if you're not fond of equations, don't dwell in engineering. if laying out spreadsheets of journals bore you down, avoid accounting. if you dislike maket strategies, economics won't work for you.

thing is whatever course you chose, provided math is present, get into the role of what you love best. what you feel you see yourself in the future. a career that where your ingenuity, skills and talents may be used, honed and developed.... good luck, girl...

Math should be pursued only if somebody is really interested in it. At higher level it really becomes very very abstract and no more relates to the day to day life.

However it is of great use.
