The only time that the Olympic and Titanic were near each other was during their sea trials. These took place long before the Titanic's official launch in April of 1912. It did not respond to the disaster. Only the Californian did. The Carpathia was within an hour's trip away. That was the ship that the Titanic crew saw on its starboard side. (It was also the reason why the ship launched rockets. It was trying to get the Carpathia's attention.)

During the launch of Titanic, the USS New York was ripped from its moorings when the Ship of Dreams past by. This was caused by the amount of suction the Titanic's tri-screw propellers were putting out. The Southampton harbor wasn't really that deep - just deep enough for the great ship.

I hope this helps you out.

No, to both. The Carpathian was the ship that picked up survivors. It was the only ship within range that did so; the Californian was within range but didn't have a wireless operator on duty so they were unaware of the sinking until the next morning.

I'll echo the recommendation of Walter Lord. Also try his book A Night to Remember. It was made into a movie which was much better than the more modern "Titanic".
