The guy who said to take it Autozone is almost right. But, don't reset it until you read it, write it down so you can google for it.
Last week my beautiful Toyota Sienna with 108, 000 miles turned on its check engine light. I have my own scanner, $150 at Autozone, and it said the A/F sensor heater was bad. I looked it up, and indeed the sensor was bad, since the heater is part of it. So I had it replaced and it is okay now.
There is something wrong, and when you find out the error codes, guess what? You can ask here what they mean, which usually means we are doing your googling for you 'cause you're too lazy... :)
It can be major things, or as simple as a bad gas cap gasket or fouled plug.

You cannot 'reset' the light. The light has come on because the computer has 'seen' something outside of its normal operating range. This information that the computer got was sent by one of the sensors. Just because a sensor has set a code does NOT mean that the sensor is defective. It only means that the code set was due to the effect of a problem. I can't stress this enough - a code does not mean that the problem is with a sensor! Think about this for a moment - if an Idle Air Control valve fault-code is set, that does not mean that the IAC is 'bad'. It just means that the code is for the IAC, so that is the best place to begin diagnosis. There could be dirt in the IAC or a restricted air filter but the code does not identify the cause, it only shows what effect the problem is having on the performance of the engine.
The most common mistake people make is "getting the codes read" by someone who has a scantool or code-reader or even a parts store and calling that a diagnosis. A proper diagnosis consists of analyzing the datastream from the PCM (engine control computer) and determining what has happened that is abnormal. I mean to say that a code is useless by itself - it does not tell you anything more than the component or circuit(s) that is (are) outside their normal parameters. Diagnosis means pinpointing the cause of the fault and preparing a detailed estimate for repair, if necessary. Sometimes it happens that a part has been dislodged or become contaminated with something and simply needs an adjustment or cleaning. Other times a sensor may have failed or a wire may have broken or there may be a worn or broken part(s). Most importantly though, you as a car owner should invest the cost of diagnosing your problem - after all you spent a fair dollar buying your car, why wouldn't you protect that investment?
I worked for Ford for 4 years as a Service Advisor (Senior level) and before that I worked as a technician (with electronic engine controls specialty).
Last thought: The money that a person spends in diagnosing a problem is often far less than the cost of leaving the problem go or of guessing at sensors or parts - the fuel mileage of the car is usually affected adversely when the light has been triggered. The computer sometimes even substitues a default value for the poor value that is being sent, because teh data is outside of what it should be.

The first thing, after all you have done is to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail There is a Schrader ( looks like a tire valve stem) valve for pressure with the engine running. Check with your local library for a Ford manual for the proper pressure. I think it should be 35#. If the fuel pressure is good, it might be a good idea to change the filter. (fuel) If the pressure is ok clean the MAF sensor. Do it gently. Can be damaged by rough handling. This should give a code all it's own..Is it idling rough??If it is remove and clean or replace the EGR valve..The MAF sensor is the main control for fuel. It sends info to the computer measuring the air flow. It measures the air and the computer sends a signal to the injectors for a specific amount of fuel for the air flow..The Oxygen sensor fine tunes the fuel to a more finite condition...........MAF Mass air flow sensor..EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve...........Did your Dad reset the computer???If not it can be done, on a Ford, by removing the battery cable for a few minutes.....Hope I am some help.!

If your fuel is running lean, then you have way to much air in your gas/air mixture. You may want to look into that. Now, I'm not sure how to do it. But my husband ans his friends work on cars all of the time. My husband goes as far as hooking up the car to our laptop and runs tests on the car (because it's got some stuff done to it) and when it runs lean, it has too much air in the ratio (again). There is something that a mechanic can do with a computer program that can fix that and not make it run so lean. Hope this helps a little bit.

If it's like a Chevy, there's an arcane sequence of pressing the accelerator, turning on ignition, etc. - this is normally done at the garage, when the service is done - I think it's the way to generate trade (for Ford garages, in your case).
My Corvette service engine soon light, is also coming on.

9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THE ONLY WAY TO RESET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A SERVICE CALL. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHECK THE ENGINE FOR SOME KIND OF PROBLEM. SOMETIMES IT CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS CHANGING YOUR OIL.
