They do this to regulate electrical current for brain implants....like grand mal seizures. They implant wires to the part of the brain that is misfiring. The wires lead down to a central processor unit, usually located in the chest. That central processor unit is the one that regulates the electrical shock the implanted wires give those parts of the brain, when they start misfiring. And the processors are checked and adjusted using a hand held unit (similar to Star Trek tricorders) that the doctor uses to input those adjustments.

Yes, many people, animals, & everyday items have microchips implanted in them. Most are used for retreiving/sending data, for tracking, or medical related devices.

On the other hand, my kitties have all been microchipped. After all, they are cats (looking around to make sure they aren't reading over my shoulder).
