Fire ants?

Sounds to me like fire ants. They're very small, but their bite will leave a white head. The larger soldier ants of the colony will leave round dark spots on the skin that will take two or three years or more to fade.
I have a few dark spots on my ankles right now from two year old bites.

Sounds like chiggers. Do they itch like crazy? Are they at sensitive points or where clothing would bind? Chiggers like the backs of knees and inside of elbows, along where your underwear are snuggest to you at the leg & waistband, your bra line for ladies, tender stomachs, etc. Tall grass and/or shady areas is where they like to hide out. Try using bug spray next time OR immediately take a bath/shower in as hot of water as you can stand, for 20 minutes. There are several commercial products for chigger bites, most of them are decent.

fire ants will cause a small white head. You know it's fire ant because even a week after the bite you might get a wave of pain that feels like fire.
