It depends. Does the original creditor report on your debt? If so, it is likely they have reported a late payment.
A collection agency usually does not report a collection until they have mailed you a letter and given you a couple weeks to pay. If they don't get a good response from you promptly they will usually file a collection item on your report.
In your particular case, you may be better off not paying. If you are trying to make a major purchase right now, and you pay this debt, the collection agency will probably update the collection item status to paid. That - oddly enough - will have a negative impact on your credit score for up to a year. Your score may be better if you simply never pay.
After you pay, some collection agencies will remove the collection from your report and some will report it as paid, which is not as good.
Some collection agencies don't report at all, leaving your original creditor to report the status of the debt.
You should purchase your own report to see what it says.
Credit cards, car payments, mortgages, and any retailer-financed financed major purchases will generally have the status of the loan reported regularly. Any failure to pay as agreed after 30 days will usually be reported.

Yes it's probably there. You should check your credit rating ASAP, especially if you have legitimate rebutal to the lowered credit score. Depending on your State and current credit status, you may be entitled to a free credit report from all three of the major credit tracking companies. Some banks, like Bank of America, have credit tracking services for a fee. In any case, bad credit can affect your ability to borrow in the future.
