Hardcore is most often played with super fast riffs, that are very simple and repetitive. The lyrics are very blunt, and often aggressive. Hardcore bands include: Kill Your Idols, D.ick Nasty & Sick of It All.

Post Hardcore is often played at variable speeds, with much more complex riffs and time signatures. The lyrics are most often more introspective, and a lot less blunt. They make more use of metaphors etc. The most famous post-hardcore band is At The Drive-In.

Hardcore came first. Hardcore is generally heavier than post hardcore. Post Hardcore has some hardcore music qualities like screaming, heavy guitars, breakdowns..etc. But Post Hardcore came after Hardcore hints the word "post" meaning after.
