I'm a new visitor to the category of politics. I avoided it primarily because I figured my blood pressure might spike. I was right.
The need to ask the question sort of intrigues me. The old, hackneyed "Those who don't know history, blah. blah, blah..." seems to be operative here.
I don't need to reaffirm the commentary above, obviously made by people who were there or have studied "there" in the history books, that points to the track record of President Carter. Add to the mix a substantial amount of evidence supports the contention that Ahmadinejad was an active participant in the original kidnapping.
President Carter can only put in an appearance and kiss Ahmadinejad's "ring". It took a republican, no non-sense "Cowboy" in the persona of Ronald Reagan "the warmonger", to do no more than be sworn into office for Ahmadinejad to immediately capitulate.
We never had to fire a shot.

FIrst of all, Ahmadinejad is not really in control of the Iranian state. The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is. Ahmadinejad is just a figurehead that changes his rhetoiric almost daily. They are playing the media for fools.
Secondly, Iran and the U.S. are not on the same level from a global perspective. We haven't used nukes since their introduction in WWII, and we haven't vowed to wipe anyone off the map (referring to Ahmadinejad's comments to annihilate Israel). Trust is something Iran has not earned from the international community, hence all the tension and debate over their possession of or desire for nuclear weapons.
Once you collect all the facts and use them in your argument, I'm sure you will see how the "shaking of hands" idea is not relevant. This is an international crisis. This is not a conflict between just two nations. Hell, just ask France. They're even more antsy than us...

No, because although Jimmy Carter may be a very 'nice' man--he is a very, very inept politician. He was a disaster as a president - and he's a worse former president--but you have to give him an A for effort. He should stick to building Habitat for Humanity Houses--great project!

Jimmy Carter couldn't get two loving brothers to shake hands, but god bless him he never gives up.
(He's not going to Iran. The Ex-President of Iran is coming to the US)

Maybe Iran will take HIM Hostage Like they did those Americans during his term. Why would Jimmy go there NOW when he didn't do ANYTHING to Free our Hostages. He stinks as much now as he did as a president. Only difference is now he has even LESS power than he did while in office. He needs to Shut up and go back to his peanut farm.

Do you know much about Ahmadinejad? Thats like saying that maybe we coulda gotten Hitler and the U.S. to shelve their tanks. There are dictators and leaders who are not going to be talked out of their ambitions. The U.S. having nukes is good. We only use them to keep others from their destructive tendencies.

Besides the fact that with the 1979 fiasco to his discredit Carter is hardly the man for the job the situation is so delicate that it needs deft handling.

I love Carter like I would my sweet old grandpa, but the man is useless.
Ahmadinejad doesn't need a handshake, he needs an international coalition to threaten Iran with crippling economic sanctions - to be followed by stringent conditions and inspections set forth by the IAEA.
