Men are mostly affected by OA before age 55, while women are mostly affected after age 55. 2 For example, prior to age 50, the prevalence of OA in most joints is higher in men than women, but after this age, more women than men are affected by OA of the hand, foot, and knee. 3

Risk

* Osteoarthritis is a complex disease, and there is considerable controversy regarding whether it is a single disease or a complex mixture of multiple diseases. Risk factors include hormonal status, bone density, nutrition, obesity, past history of trauma, race, occupation, joint deformity, and knee meniscetomy. Genetics also play a role in OA, with potential differences in genetic risk at different skeletal sites and between the sexes. 1

* Women are more likely to suffer from OA during perimenopause; therefore, the lower level of estrogen at this time may be an important regulator of OA. Although epidemiological studies have demonstrated an increased prevalence of OA in perimenopausal women, studies have not consistently linked lifetime exposure to estrogen, including effects of menopausal hormone therapy, to protection against OA. 4, 5

* The joint connecting the thumb to the wrist shows greater levels of incongruity in women than in men. This finding may help explain why women over 50 are more at risk for OA of this joint. 6

* Men have significantly larger knee cartilage volume than women, even after adjustments for bone and body size differences, suggesting men are naturally more protected from OA of the knee than women. 7

Could be lower levels of hormones. Could be other physical problems in that area. I had a hysterectomy 9 years ago and was put on HRT. Even at low levels of hormones my sex drive took off! I am afraid of wearing my guy out! I am 53 and the sex just keeps getting better and better.

Women operate on an emotional level. Sex is more than just the physical act. Appeal to their emotions and the sex drive will follow.
