i think i need to have one value to the right of the decimal
i already tried 3220.0 and the program told me i was wrong. altho the problem could be the program itself being wrong

If the exponents are the same in scientific notation, simply subtract the first numbers.

Since the exponential parts are the same, subtract the numerical part (mantissa): 4.32-1.1 = 3.22 but keep the exponential part, so the result is 3.22 x 10E3 cm. It is based on the distributive rule of algebra:

a*b - c*b = (a-c) * b,

where in your example, b = 10E3, a = 4.32 and c = 1.1

I think maybe you're making this harder than it needs to be.
Since they are both already to the same power, this would
be the same as 4320 - 1100 cm, which would be 3220 or 3.22 x10e3 cm.
If they weren't both in the same power, you would just need to convert one so that they were, then subtract the "simple" numbers.

edited to add: try converting the answer back to scientific notation, ie. enter 3.22 x10e3 cm instead of 3220.
