By geographical separation. People who live in a country of high terrain (mountains) developed communities near valleys and low lying areas. Farms grew up around regions with more fertile soil (like the grape regions of California and France). Communities built up around lakes and rivers because of easy water supply and food to harvest (fish).

Physical characteristics like mountains or rugged land act like a barrier (for ex. the Appalachian Mts of the US in the colonial times) that prevents people from settling around the area or on the other side. Deserts and other arid areas are sparcely settled because it is difficult to irrigate.

Also, population tend to cluster around rivers because not only is the soil rich (and well-watered) and good for growing crops, it is excellent for trade.

People like to live near sources of water such as lakes and river for transoportation as well as drinking (Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River - Atlantic Ocean). As well, areas with fertile earth (such as the golden horsehoe) are good for harvesting and raising livestock as opposed rocky (Canadian Shield) or barren (Arctic) earth. Areas near large bodies of water (ocean, great lakes) will also have much more percipitation and thus may lure or deter people, depending on their needs.

well just things like coastal areas are generally more populated because of weather conditions, so they attract jobs, and then people. and then fertile areas are more populated because they attract farming companies and families, who in turn attract more people.

and mountainous areas attract less people because they are undesirable w/ their cold weather, and lack of resources, and other people.

things like that.
