My 3rd grader is in a dual luangage (Spanish/English) program. I have a Spanish/English dictionary, but that didn't help me. My daughter says that tengo means "I have" and anos is "years". I must be getting something lost in the translation. She thought they were asking about pets, but it doesn't seem like it to me. Thanks for your help.

It's an idiomatic expression used to state your age. The english equivalent: " I am 8 years old." is expressed in Spanish as "I have 8 years.", or "tengo ocho anos"

gp4rts got it, most likely. That's a very typical question for early Spanish classes, and if you look in your 3rd grader's Spanish book, you should see that "Tengo ___ anos" is translated as "I am ___ years old."

Spanish has a few of these expressions that don't translate directly to English, but textbook writers seem to love using them (probably because they're simple.) Another one you'll find that your 3rd grader probably knows is "Me llamo ____", which is directly translated as "I call myself _____," but more correctly translated as "My name is _____."

Yes, Tengo means "I have" and anos means "years". In the space between, all you have to do is put her age on the line.

Example- "Tengo quince anos". "I have 15 years" or "I am 15 years old"

If i have confused you even more, im very sorry...

You need to put in the age of your child. If your child is 9 years old and nine in Spanish is Nueve, then you have to say that. I have nine years.

Tengo nueve anos. I have nine years or I am nine years old.
