I am thinking of buying noise-cancelling headphones but I don't know if they are really worth the price. Is there really that much of a difference between using a mid-range pair of those, and using the earbuds that come with an iPod? I'd be using them mostly on airplanes and Amtrak trains.

If you own a pair, could you please include the brand and price range when you reply, so I can have all the details in case I decide to buy.

Please don't answer if you have never used them--- I'm looking for real user experiences and not quotes from the people who sell them. Of course the people who sell them will say they work great and are worth $200!!! :)

Thanks!

I have the Bose noise reduction headphones and I think they are worth every 200 or so bones I ponied up for them. I especiallly appreciate the noise reduction when I use them on airplanes. (I don't use them as much around the house since I have no real need to do so, and because I want to keep them pristine.) I would not buy the newer Bose version - the ones with smaller ear pieces - because I think the ear cuffs just have to be more effective.

I say the brand and price don't really matter. What matter the most is to get a headphone which has ear cup that covers your ear and feels comfortable.
I'm a DJ at some clubs in Los Angeles. I went thru many headphones. From my experience, the Sony VDJ-700 $240 (at that time) and technics brand for $70 has no difference at all.

Why not buy a set with the understanding that you can return them for a full refund within a certain time frame. Staples, for one, allows that and I am sure that others do as well.
When you try them your self you do not have to depend on advice from others. Every persons hearing is different so what suits one may not suit another.
