As with all bad habits, smoking is hard to quit. Others have mentioned the "don't quit cold turkey" advice doctors give, and it is very true. From conception, there is already an addiction shared between mother and child. Quitting cold turkey will only harm the developing child.

As for those who call smoking mothers stupid, or state they "don't deserve to have kids," that's just a personal opinion, yours that you have the right to have. Remember that others also have the right to not have to hear it. There are soooo many factors in ALL of life that "will affect an unborn child" that to lower the entire "risk factor" you'd have to be dang near in a bubble and eating only organic foods. In life - we can't do that. So you make due with what you can.
Kudos to mothers who quit smoking or cut back to the barest of minimums. Congrats to the woman who can give up soda and fast food to 9 months. But you know what? How many centuries have children been born to smoking mothers and survived? I'm sure we all have someone in our ancestry that smoked and we're all here, right?

So yeah, it's a nasty habit. It's not always pleasant for someone to see a pregnant woman smoke. But you know what? It is our choice. We know the risks. Maybe we want to quit. Maybe we've cut back and are proud of ourselves for doing what we can with the willpower we are given. Taking vitamins, eating right, getting rest and exercise... those and so many more things are also important and something I personally make sure I follow for not only the baby, but for myself. My usual smart alec response to the question "Why are you smoking while pregnant!?" is: "We're going for stress-free pregnancy here."

So reguardless of your opinion, which you are fully entitled to, smoking mothers also have their opinions...and their reasons. We know you disagree. We're sorry it bugs you. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I smoked before I was pregant When I found out I was preg, it was not planned, I asked my doc and he said to cut down as much as possible because if I were to quit cold turkey then it could cause other problems. I wish I had never started in the first place but... My baby was born 2wk over due and weighed 9 lbs and 4oz. She was 22 inches long. She is fine now If I had a chance to have another I would quit first. Don't judge what you don't know.

Smoking is an addiction; I was a smoking mother. When I started smoking, they didn't know that smoking and drinking was harmful to your child. I agonized as my children were growing up, because they learned that these habits could harm your children. Luckily, my kids were fine; but some of my friend's children weren't! Just know that some women truly don't realize the harm they could be causing thier unborn fetuses!

Because unfortunatelly women are able to get pregnant but not every pregnant woman is fit to be a good mother! Being a good mother begins from the minute that your baby is in your womb and if they do not care for them from the very beginning., well everything that starts wrong usually ends up wrong also.. It is very sad, but I guess that is why in this world, bad things will never stop happening..

My mum works with a woman who smoked and drank during her last trimester so that the baby was only small and easier to deliver, and she wanted it to come early. She got her wish and her daughter was born 3 weeks early and weighed 6 pound 3 ounces.

I think it is terrible that a woman who is so obviously selfish is having a child. And I find it extremely unfair for a woman who knowingly endangers her daughter's life should have a healthy, normal child when there are so many women out there who do the right thing and who do not have healthy kids.

they don't know weather or not it will effect the baby, years ago smoking was like having a drink of water, nobody knew there where effects for the unborn child, I don't think anybody really knows for sure what if anything is happening.

You share a blood supply. Your blood flows through your baby. Anything that enters your blood stream (nicotine for example as well as alcohol) enters the baby's blood stream. If you need help quitting ask your doctor. It's VERY important. Good luck !

Because it's a bad habit and very hard to stop, as well as quitting cold turkey while pregnant can cause more problems than continuing.
