Lightly sand, prime and paint away. Just be sure to top with a good poly. You will need at least 2 coats, depending on the foot traffic. And I recommend a light sanding and another coat of poly at least every 2 years if the traffic is heavy. Be brave, go for it!

Really...Have you considered how hard it would be for someone to restore it after you move on. It is my belief that we just care for a house...never really own it. If it is a well build house someone other than you will have a life in "your" house.
Be kind to them.
