Nope- Microsoft's great cashflow came from one incredible deal with IBM- they were lucky IBM agreed to it, but shrewd enough to ask, and the rest is history. The company then engaged in predatory & illegal business practices throughout most of the 90's that heavily damaged the software industry. They received a record fine from the EU, but received only a slap on the wrist here in the USA.

All they really did was simply standardize PC software. Excel and Word weren't better than Lotus 1-2-3 and Wordperfect, but Microsoft Office made things simple, made things consistent. Internet Explorer is now the most widely used, most fertile petri dish for viruses and spyware the world has ever seen.

And outside of PC software, Microsoft's other endeavors haven't been all that successful. The Xbox managed to get a following but they take a loss on every unit sold and remain a distant 2nd to Sony in the console market. Their attempts at Home Entertainment like UltimateTV.. yikes.

Is Bill Gates a great philanthropist and social activist? You bet!

Genius? Er..... no.

So why is Bill Gates a genius but not his business partner Paul Allen? Is Larry Ellison a genius too? Ellison founded a software company too, and he didn't need Paul Allen's help. The only difference betwee Allen and Gates is Gates courts publicity and Allen doesn't.

There are plenty of people in the world in the same league financially, but they like their privacy. That's doesn't mean Gates is bad guy because he likes the media, but it does mean he isn't necessarily "the richest man in the world"-that's a matter of how you do the accounting. It's nice that he gives a lot to charity, there are others who do so anonymously.

No he's not a genius. He is however very smart. For the record, he did not invent the Internet. That was created by yours truly ARPA - Advanced Research Projects Agency, part of the military in the 70's. He barely started giving money AFTER he married his wife Melinda. He started of Microsoft by buying QDOS (Quick and dirty operating system), reprogramming it and naming it MS-DOS. Licensed it to IBM. As for Windows, technically, they didn't make the first version, XEROX did. Microsoft was smart enough to buy, add another feature that it bought, the mouse, and put 2 and 2 together. They reprogrammed it and voila Windows 2.0. From there, 3.1,3.11 for workgroups, NT 3.4, NT 4.0, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP and coming soon Vista (Codename Longhorn).

I wouldn't call him a genius, but it determines what you rate as genius or not, I suppose.

He is intelligent, and he used his intelligence wisely, and made a huge load of cash. I think willpower is what it takes. I say kudos to him, and I love the windows OS, as well as Word and Excel and some other window programs. MSN Messenger, for another.

BUT! You made a mistake when you said he invented the internet. That is incorrect. Still, he's done enough amazing things, that one less wouldn't hurt his portfolio.
