as a general rule in guitar soling, if the song is power chords you solo in that key and if its open chords you solo 3 half steps below the key, and of course there are a feew songs that could go either way so you need to listen to see whether to start on the key or 3 half steps below it (pentatonic Scale)

Just learn your chords and learn the scales that go with them. If you are lucky enough to have a really good "ear" for music you will be able to copy or even create solos. If it is a very fast solo you want to learn, you may not be able to master it too quickly or maybe ever. You just do what you can handle for now and work up to the speedy ones. Also, there are several positions to play scales in for each key. Get some instructional books or DVDs or find a good teacher.

Nope, the good general rule is.

Use the notes of the scale that the song is built throughout

Use the scale of the chord that is been employed and follow the changes changing the scale.

Examples.

Song in C

Use C major, or C major pentatonic

Son in C

Use C major in the C chord
D minor escale in the Dm chord
etc.

It´s alike to what you say but it´s not the same.

But at the end of the day, if it sounds good to you, who cares about the scale?

This isn't a question. But just so you know. "3 half steps down", which is a minor 3rd, is called the relative minor of the key. And try not to stick to pentatonic scales.

There are various varieties of polyphonic enjoying in solos. Interspersing broken chords in with single notes, unison bends or different multitonal bends (unison is whilst the low tone of a pair of notes is bent until it has the comparable pitch using fact the organic greater tone of the pair.) some stuff could additionally basically be overdubs with yet another song interior the historic past. In "yet another Brick" the main solo has various broken chord artwork. enjoying 2 notes of a chord somewhat of singles, sufficient to furnish it a multitonal fuller sound on some tones yet no longer various notes at as quickly because it muddies issues up.
