Does anybody know what the heck this movie is about? Because my mom and I have seen it three times and can't figure it out. Plus, it gets more confusing every time you watch the dang thing.

Here's what I think. I think Ewan's caracter is actually the schizo artist who has been under therapy for a long time. He committed suicide...but is stuck in this middle world Ergo, all his principal charactors are either suicidal artists or psychiatrists. Perhaps he came across an accident and being delusional believed himself to be a doctor but couldn't save the boy. this pushed him over the edge. All the other bystanders at the accident have come to play important roles in his delusions. The apartment he enters with the other doctor is in fact his own. The paintings he sees are all his own work. He is trapped in a world of delusion and illusion in his own mind. Make sense or have I tipped my rocker also.

Ryan Gosling's character got into a car accident and was about to die, but in those final moments of life, he created an entire new life in his mind which (in a very Wizard of Oz moment) included a bunch of the people who were standing around the accident, or trying to save him. Yeah, it was a pretty stupid movie in my opinion. The only really bad role that Ewan McGregor has chosen, in my opinion.
