I'm not very technical at all...but, from my experience......
Assuming the new phone is not sim locked to another carrier (I think that's common with low priced, or prepaid phones) than the old sim card..... it works for me when I have even changed different brands of phones and different models.
A housebreaker left his mobile at my home...and I figured, as police don't care about much about doing anything around here, that the best justice was to keep his more modern phone, and slip my sim card into it. Success.

You can do it, you won't have to change service or phone number, just take your phone in to the store of your brand like if you have T-Mobile take it to a T-Mobile store or if you have Verizon take it to a Verizon Wireless store and they'll take care of it and make sure you keep your same phone number.
