Practice!
Go as far as you can and hold for ten seconds. Take a deep breath and as you breathe out, further extend your split. Do that sequence 4 more times. Do this 3 times a day (both ways and in the middle) and you'll get better in no time.
Another exercise is to stretch by having the back leg straight and down to the ground as much as possible and bend the front leg (left leg back, right knee to side with right heel in front of left hip) in front of you.
Breath a lot and practice.

I would just stretch ALL the time. Do open leg stretches. Don't force yourself down, you could hurt yourself. Also work on it everyday all the time. It takes a long time to reach it. Work on stetching your legs all the time and don't give up. Work on both legs, not just one. Ask a dance or gymnastics teacher for help and good stretches. Or a friends who participates maybe in cheerleading, dance, or gymnastics. Good luck!

Everyday try doing the splits and go down lower and lower each day. In a few weeks or shorter you'll achieve doing the splits. Don't forget to strecth first! Don't want to pull a muscle.

either spread your legs and contine spreading them and you get closer to the floor or start off on the floor then spread legs and put pressure on it balancing yourself with your hands on either side of you and apply pressure
