well the S on his chest means different things depending on which storyline of Superman you are talking about. in the TV show Smallville the S symbol is actually like a family crest thingy that symbolized his family name(his birth family from Krypton) in a number of them it is left to believe that the S stands for Superman. hope that helped you out!

That depends on who you listen to. In the movies, (and, I think also, on the tv shows) they say it is a Kryptonian letter, standing for the Family El (Superman's family), like a monogram.
However, if you go back to the original comics, (back when Superboy was introduced) it was always referred to as a stylized letter S. Superboy said it stood for "Saving lives, Stopping crime, and giving people Super help whenever they need it."
I always liked that. It was so noble and meaningful, even if people think it is sort of corny today. It is, in a way, almost like Green Lantern's oath when he recharges his ring; it reminds you of who he is and what he is all about.
When Superman was revamped for his fiftieth anniversary (back in 1988) he was given the name 'superman' by Lois Lane whose headline "Superman Saves Space Shuttle" ran in the Daily Planet after his first public appearance.
When he brainstormed with his adoptive parents Ma and Pa Kent (who had not died years ago, in this revision of the mythos), Ma made the costume so that he would be recognizable to people at a distance and put the S symbol on his chest so that people would call him Superman without asking him what his name was.
I prefer the S symbol rather than a Kryptonian letter that everybody mistakes for an S. There have been so many different versions of Krypton and its alphabet, that it seems a little ridiculous to say it is a Kryptonian monogram.

The S on Superman's Chest has traditionaly stood for Superman. It has been developed into a Kryptonian symbol in more recent years. It has been noted as the symbol for the House of El. So in some ways it is like a coat of arms. This past year it has been used as Hope in Kryptonian.

The 'S' is his familys symbol on his home planet on Krypton, The name Superman was given to him after people in metropolis askedwhat the 'S' stands for (not knowing his past) Lois Lane replyed 'Superman' and the name stuck, though the real reason is that on Krypton its not an 'S' its just a symbol on there planet (other people on the planet had diffrent symbols, not that i could type them because there not on a earth keyboard) it just so happenswhen he came to earth his symbol is recognisable to us as an 'S'. Thats the real reason unlike the people who are calling you stupid on heresating itsSuperman, Originally it wasent. Hope this helps.

I will try to explain it simple. When Lois Lane was falling and then caught by Kal-El, she saw the symbol on his chest that appeared to be a 'S.'
So the next day, the public began calling him Superman.
Yet the symbol on his chest, is crest of his family heritage. It is not a letter.

Costumes with other letters of the alphabet fit worse then the one he got stuck with....
So when people saw the "S" on his suit, they started calling him "SuperMan"!
Can you imagine what his nickname might have been if he fit into
another costume... let's say with the letter... "Z" on the chest?
"ZippoMan"!???
