Soseki Natsume & Mishima are both "classic" Japanese authors.
Banana Yoshimoto & Haruki Murakami are more modern.
Personally don't really care much for Japanese literature, but they have won an impressive number of international awards.
Enjoy!

The long book The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki,
sometimes billed as the world's first novel, has
been translated. I don't know whether Rashomon
has been, but suspect it has. Can't remember the
author's name at the moment.

Yukio Mishima...was a gay author who was loyal to old Japan and ended up committing hari-kiri because of the modernization of japan. Wrote a wonderful tetraology that was very romantic.

Natsuo Kirino is a female author who writes dark suspense fiction. I highly recommend "Out" for a view of modern Japan that you don't usually see.
