Don't spend money for an Xbox 360 unless you get the premium edition and connect to Xbox Live via high speed Internet. The wireless controllers are amazing and the hard drive is important for saving games and installing demos.

Yet, I think your question is related to the first set of builds that had high instances of teething problems. When I bought my system in May I heard people claiming on eBay that they were selling 5th generation systems. I'm certain that Microsoft has implemented many modifications (mods) to the hardware build in order to improve reliability. But, I haven't seen a list of serial numbers vs. version/build/mod. I recommend purchasing a system at a busy outlet (retail or on-line) and you'll be reasonably confident that you have the latest version/build/mod.

Yes, I recommend the premium also. The wireless controllers are excellent, and you must have the hard drive to play original xbox games or to download content from the internet.

When people refer to the first and second generation xbox 360s, they are referring to systems that had problems. Some of the first units produced did have more problems than those that came later. If you are buying a new system now you should have no problems. The fact that some systems in that initial batch were buggy would keep me from being tempted by any used systems. There is no way of knowing if they are ok or not, and they would also no longer have any warranty.

Yeah acutally there are i believe Two versions of the xbox 360.. one is the Relase xbox's which are the xbox's that came out withing the first month.. those are okay.. and then there are the second gens which are i think better because they solved some freezing issues and has the latestest software.. if you have a internet connection at home, i doesnt matter which one you get because you can just upgrade to the latest software through the internet..

and of course you do know about the Core system and the Regular one right... the Core doesnt have a HD and the Regular has 10 GB of memory..

There is the Core which is everything you need, but the premium xbox 360 is that whith a bunch of extras, but its 100$ more, on my opinion, not worth it

well since people were complaining about overheating Microsoft was going to put in a new chip which is cheaper to produce and get the same quality of the other chip so that will fix the overheating and maybe the price.
