If you had her number or a way to communicat her just tell her your IM or your Mail address so could she search for you and add you into her messenger .....
If she didn't know how to get an IM , she just had to have an email , then she installs the messenger and then writes her mail address and passwrod and then here she is .....

here are many diffrent IM programs on the internet.
yahoo IM will always be on http://yahoo.com
Windows live or MSN will always be on either http://microsoft.com
AIM will always be on http://aim.com
more IM's in http://download.com

I think it is possible to show your friend how to use IM. It is free & always available and pretty easy to learn.
