There's a great midas shop that I go to sometimes. They've even taken labor off of a job when they got it done quicker than the book listed- a rarity.
It really depends on the manager of a particular shop though. Talk to a few people near you and see what experiences they've had.

RE:
How good is Midas at replacing brake pads?
The guy who just did my inspection said I'm due for new ones sometime within the next 1,000 miles, so I'm just looking at my options. Midas seems like the best one so far.

Brakes are not hard to do at all, the only thing that makes them "expensive" is the liability, health risk's for the mechanic and the disposal of the old ones (allot of places still just throw them in the trash tho).
Any place that will give you a estimate, lifetime guarantee and do the work on the low side of the scale (avoid the really cheep places, there is usually something wrong with them and a lifetime guarantee is no good if there out of business) is the place to go, Midas is not the cheapest but you can trust the guarantee

The Midas in our town does excellent work on brakes as well as other automotive related problems. Also replacing brake pads is an easy straight forward procedure.

Brake pads are a No Brainer repair. Find the best price with the best warrantee, and that will do it. I had brakes put on at Brakes Plus, and they've lasted 50k miles.

Find an independent shop and request premium pads. Do research comparing brake pads, ask friends and or co-workers for a shop referral.

I'm not sure Is Midas a trained mechanic? How long has he been doing brakes? Ask Midas for his qualifications. If he's not qualified then ask Ben or Mike or someonelse to do your brakes.

Midas is severely overpriced, as anywhere else.
You can replace your own pads.

I just put new rotors and pads on the front of my ranger 4x4 & the parts were $125.00 at auto zone with a lifetime warranty. I put them on myself in less than an hour. I would check around for prices, that sounds a little high.
