The movie took place in early to mid 90's. A girl was really rich and lived at an orphanage. She is told her dad was killed, and she had no money, so they sent her to live up in the attic to be a slave. She meets a girl in next house that is also poor, and they become friends. At the end of the movie, she finds out her dad is alive, and he takes her and her friend.

A Little Princess is right. It was based on a novel by the same writer of the Secret Garden. I think the movie was made since the Warner Bros. adaption of Secret Garden was so popular.
Interesting fact- it was released into theatres twice.

there are two movies very similar that most people get confused on "The Little Princess" with shirley temple and "A Little Princess" the one you want is "A Little Princess"
