And if it means what I think it means (dating outside someone that isn't your spouse, but that's okay with your spouse) why would someone do that?

An open marriage means that you can go outside the marriage for physical/emotional satisfaction. Why would someone do it? They really aren't ready for marriage in the traditional sense. The sad thing is that there are a lot of people in open marrianges and they dont even know it (translation: they are married to a cowardly cheating spouse)

Some people don't look at marriage as being a sacred and monogamous union. Some people prefer to have their cake and eat it too. It's sad, but some feel it keeps their marriage exciting and keeps them from hurting their spouse by cheating. Since they both know about the outside lovers, it isn't considered cheating.

You answered part of your own question!

As for the latter part... the people who are in these kinds of relationships are better to answer...

I am a subscriber to Tango magazine and they had an article in the April/May issue about this, I tried to look it up on their site, & they said they post articles after hte next issue is published, and that the article will be on their site soon, that they are working on this part of their site; to get it up and going so people can revisit past articles!

While I can understand why some couples choose to do this, I am not one for it. BOTH parties should be willing participants and agree to such an arrangement & ALL it may entail.

As for the reasons WHY they would want to be in such a relationship, they have better answers than any of us could give here! As everyone has differing opinions of many different things, this topic no exception!

Some may say it adds spice to the relationship, that they feel they can be in love with more than one person, at any particular time (again enhancing the commitment to the person they married), to possibly fulfilling fantasies one or the other may or may not be willing to follow thru with... & each finding ways to fill those voids, in essence making themselves happy(ier).

Basically their reasons are their own. If they're ok/happy with it!? More power to them!

Hope this helps!

=)

Open marriage does mean that two people that are married agrees to have sex with others as well as with eachother. I don't know why people choose to do such. I guess the mind can play tricks on many people. I can understand how curiosity is there however, you do the right thing because it's the right thing to do. It is cheating even if both agree and it is wrong.

Some people enjoy that lifestyle. Doesn't makes them stupid or anything else. Just makes it their choice. More power to them if they are happy.

Who's to say those of us who stay with one partner are not the stupid or brainwashed ones because this is the lifestyle society and religion has drilled into us?

Divorce rates for first marriages are approaching 60%. Divorce rates among swinging couples is around 40%.

Couples often need to find a way to reconnect physically and emotionally. Swinging may be one creative solution to the problem of habituation – it provides sexual variety, adventure, and the opportunity to live out one's fantasies as a couple without secrecy and deceit.

Yes and as they say different strokes for different folks. Going by the divorce rate now and reading some of these questions sounds like most needs an open marriage to keep it alive.

Me personally I would never agree to that or care for that type of relationship.

Where you are married and still see other people and your spouse knows about it and does it as well. It is a way for married people to cheat and not face any consequences. Like having you cake and eating it too.

If something is lacking in a marriage (bored with the sex, lack of excitement, etc.) but the couple wants to stay married (either for the kids or, more often, for financial reasons) they might agree to have an 'open' marriage. Their marriage becomes more like an 'in name only' type of marriage.

your right that is what it means, both parties date others, i don't know but you would think if they wanted to date other people they would not have gotten married, some say couples that have been married a long time, do it to keep the spice in the marriage, doesn't make much sense,

You have it right, and to me, if you are having an "open Marriage" why bother.
If you have to see someone else to spice up your sex life, it may be time to call it quits.
I know, some say, I love my partner, but the sex, isn't so hot, so this way, we both get what we want.
Who knows, if that really works? I guess only those who are in it.
