for an OPTOMETRIST (the person you go to for routine check-up's and glasses/contact lenses), you would need vision coverage. For an OPTHAMOLOGIST, it's considered medical, so you'd use your medical insurance, NOT vision.

You would need medical insurance. Depending on the type of insurance you may need to see your regular doctor first and ask him to refer you to one. If you don't have medical insurance check and see what your employer offers, it's usually the cheapest way to go. If they don't offer anything then see if there are any state funded plans you qualify for.

Your primary doctor will refer you to an ophthalmologist, your medical health plan will approve the referral, and you will be on your way to get the exams and treatment you need.

Never have been to an optometrist, I always use my opthamologist and my insurance pays with no hassle. An opthamologist is so much better anyway!
