Water is made up of 2 parts Hydrogen and one part Oxygen. It is expressed as H2O. Water is not an element but it is an organic chemical that is required for life as we know it to exist.

H2O is pure water. Water can have a lot of other things in it to make it not a pure substance. Water is the standard of our scientific realm. It is the universal solvent (water dissolved the Grand Canyon, ya know). Water is what we measure everything by. The specific gravity of water is the baseline which all other chemical compounds are measured.

Is Water A Mixture

It depends what you mean by mixture. Often "mixture" means combinations of substances in which each component retains its basic properties. For example, if you mix sugar and water, the sugar molecules and the water molecules intermingle, but each retain their original structure and characteristics. A compound, such as water, is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, but these elements do not retain any of the properties they had in isolated form; essentially they form a whole new material. If you apply this defintion, water is a pure compound, not a mixture.

I would think you could evaporate the water off (or maybe even sublimate it) and leave the soap behind. Soapy water is a mixture. Soap itself (well the stuff you buy at a store) is a mixture too, with all the perfumes, coloring, etc.

Water is a mixture because it is made up of molecules that are composed of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. An atom is the smallest particle of a pure substance (element) that has all the properties of that substance. A molecule is made up of a number of atoms bonded together.
