A poke in the eye or a punch to the face?

This all depends on who would deliver the poke or punch. If from you, I feel neither would be too serious, considering you are basically a fine honest non-violent chicken who really wouldn't want to hurt anyone. With that said, I'd go for the poke in the eye. Why? Because 'poke' suggests a much milder form of attack. You could have used the term 'stab' which would imply a serious injury. A simple poke probably would invoke the blink reflex and my eye wouldn't be harmed.

A punch to the face is preferable over an eye poke for real.

Well, a poke in the eye could cause permanent damage to your sight...a punch in the face could, too; but it's not as likely.

It is better to give than to receive. But if I've got to take a punch or two while I'm throttling someone, I'll take a shot to the face rather than risk my baby blues.
