I got a call from an art teaching program to come and teach drawing to 6th graders. For some reason I am feeling really nervous, and afraid what the kids (11-12yrs old) will think of me (I know that's sad). I'm 24 and I have this fear of speaking in a large crowd, also I don't really have a big vocabulary. I'm fit for the skill as an artist but I don't believe I'm fit to teach. Has anyone taugh art to elementary students and how did it go? The only teaching experience I have is sunday school with Pre-K-1st grade...but has nothing to do with art of course.

Kids that age don't need to know a big art vocabulary... they just need to learn how to appreciate art in others and express it from within themselves.

This sounds like a peach of a job - all you have to do is encourage them and reinforce positive expression - what could be more fun for an artist? When they see you feeling good about them, they will automatically feel good about you - and artistic excitement is infectious.

Keep it simple, and watch their reactions - most of what you do will be hands-on and not much talking anyway, just talk about what you love about art. Guaranteed you'll all have a blast - wish I were you!

Don't teach the kids like retards, it makes them feel depressed. (Trust me, I know.) Don't baby talk to them, and just talk to them like you would talk to an adult.

That's it. You'll be fine if you follow that advice.
