I heard quite a pop about an hour ago in a lightning storm. That may be unrelated. Nevertheless, my sink is suddenly not draining. I poured some water down in and dingy water came right up. My disposal also didn't work. I (stupidly) put my hand down there once the disposal switch was off and felt only flat surfaces. Strangely, I couldn't feel any obvious place for the water to flow through. (The disposal blades are sealing the drain shut?) I checked the breakers and they seemed normal. I pressed the reset button. I don't hear a peep from the disposal and the disgusting water is receding very slowly. Do I have a problem with my switch, my disposal, my drain, a fuse? I'd appreciate your wisdom! Thanks.

You have two separate problems. First, the drain. The disposal has nothing to do with causing a stopped up drain. Check your trap before anything else. They often clog. The disposal might just be stuck or it might not have power. Do you have a way to check the electricity? Your unit should have come with a tool to rotate the disposal which might unstick it. Try using that.

On the bottom of your disposal, there is a small hole for an Allen wrench - it wil have the octagon shape.
Use an Allen wrench to turn the blades manually. You don't need to "see" them turn, you'll feel them turning as you turn the Allen wrench.
Check your electrical box and doublecheck the switches for your disposal. Off, then on again.
Then flip disposal switch - if you hear nothing, it's possible the unit is fried which requires an electrician/plumber to fix.

Do what PATV said, but there is another thing. Usually on the bottom of the disposal there is a small red RESET button. Push that. Also, check to see if the circuit breaker to the disposal is tripped. If so, push it all the way OFF, then back to ON.

A power surge may have fried your dispose all. I would have a qualified electrician look at .

Save money and at least check the fusebox first. :) Good luck to you
