It is a variable depending on the specific songs you put on it. A simple rule of thumb is that 3 MP3 will average 5 megs. But a 256 meg player doesn't really have 256 megs after it is formatted. Also, it it has a phonebook, datebook, or videos, they all take up space as well.

Suppose your 256 megs had 200 begs available.
200/5*3 = 120 songs. If your music tends to be long tracks, then look and see how many megs it takes on your PC to hold 10. A PC uses a different format than a MP3 player, but you will get an idea. Once you know how many megs (Make sure you are looking at MP3 files, not CDA files) 10 songs use up (N), then the formula would be 200/10*N. Maybe you can look at the MP3 player using your PC and see how much space is available, then you now what to use for the 200 number in the formula.

Apple says that 256 megs will hold 60 songs.
From Apple: Song capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding.

So, it will hold between 60 and 120! ha ha ha! Does that help?

;-D It is really a variable. Keep putting songs in until it is full! Are you using iTunes? That will tell you how many megs a playlist takes.

Assuming your average song is 4 minutes long and the quality is 128kbps… 256MB will hold about 65 songs and 512MB will hold about 130 songs.

Each song is about 3-6mb depending on the quality. That is about 42-85 songs on the small one and 84-170 or 150 on the big one.

at between 5mb and 10mb per track that is between 25 and 50 songs on the smaller player and 50 to 100 on the larger player if you ripat lower bit rates and worse sound quality you will get more songs on the player, i would never rip below 128Kbps
