When I use my Instant Messenger I go to chat, and the chat does not come up.?

I know that chat is there becouse someone comes up and want to chat with me. Like when I go into a chat room that I like I do not see it. But chatters can still chat with me, but that makes me not to pick some one to chat whith. Please help me.
