Go to preferences in messenger and then go to alerts and sounds. Unclick the box that says enable alert sounds. I can't stand them either, and I always turn them off, so I know this works.

Select Preferences from Yahoo Messenger, Alerts & Sounds then Uncheck Enable Sound Alert. Apply the changes to have it take effect.

You go back to AIM expressions and change it, you go to the settings by pressing F7 and changing the settings, or, you turn off the speakers.
