My girlfriend and I can each answer most questions on Jeopardy correctly. It's a matter of listening, being interested, having a decent memory, and, hate to say it, being really really smart.

Because they read extensively in books, magazines, and newspapers, they are well-informed and have a great amount of what is called general knowledge, namely, a knowledge about a lot of things. Therefore, they do well on a program like Jeopardy. They are curious and love, so that helps as well.

remembering useless stuff; you absolutely do not have to be smart to be able to answer most of the questions correctly. You just need to have read or heard about it from somewhere before. It only tests your memory, not your analytical abilities, so it has no relations to intelligence.

maybe they tell them what they need to know before the show and then the contestants study those subjects?

The more you read the more you know. Read a variety of stuff. Stay away from "The Enquirer"

They're just really smart. Probably had no, or very few, friends in school because their noses were always stuck in a book.

and some times they just know the answers

they do tell them the subject....if not give them some of the answer before the show.....I mean they have too.....No normal person can get in front of those viewers and answer all of those correctly!!
