If there are no kids involved you can file your own uncontested divorce with the local court. You will have to pay the filing and court fee, but it is a whole lot cheaper than an attorney. If you are both in agreement and can settle the belongings between the two of you it will be a simple matter. If there are hard feelings or one of you does not want the divorce... then no, you should have an attorney handle it for you.
If there are children involved, then no.

You need an attorney to protect your rights...especially where children are involved. An annulment can be done if there are no children and the marriage is less than 1 year. A dissolution is less expensive and quick, but you and spouse must agree on issues. Either way an attorney is needed

YES, THERE ARE A FEW OPTIONS.
1.YOU BOTH CAN AGREE ON THE TERMS OF THE SEPERATION(FINANCES, WHO GETS WHAT, CHILDSUPPORT, CUSTODY ETC.), GET IT NOTARIZED AND THEN GET A FAMILY JUDGE TO DIVORCE YOU. THAT WILL BE ACCEPTABLE IN MOST STATES.
2.YOU CAN GET THE ASSISTANCE OF LEGAL HELP(DEPENDING ON YOUR INCOME), CALL YOUR LOCAL BAR ASSOCIATION TO FIND OUT WHERE YOUR LEGAL HELP IS, BEC. IT IS OFTEN UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME IN DIFFERENT STATES.
3.YOU CAN GO TO THE FAMILY COURT AND FILE FOR A LEGAL SEPARATION, BUT IF HE HAS AN ATTORNEY YOU MIGHT NOT GET WHAT YOU WANT.
4.SOME STATES DO PROVIDE WHAT IS CALLED A SIMPLE DISSOLUTION WHICH IS ONLY APPLICABLE IN CASES WHERE THERE IS NO PROPERTY TO BE DIVIDED. IN MINNESOTA FOR EXAMPLE, YOU CAN FILE FOR A SIMPLE DISSOLUTION THE FIRST 8 YEARS OF YOUR MARRIAGE, YOU FILE THE PAPERSORK AND HAVE TO WAIT 90 DAYS OR SO, AND THEN THE MARRIAGE GETS DISSOLVED.
GOOD LUCK

Ya just do it your self then all you have to pay is filing fees there are lots of web sites that offer the divorce form you can download. If not sure on them contact your local university abd find a law student or professor to help you with them. (Doing the same thing my self) But everything have to be agreed upon, and already split up between you and so on. I have to be (for lack of better terms) a very nice divorce.

Yes, people can go to the county court house and get forms to fill out. The thing about this is how you fill them out. You really need to hire a paralegal to do it for you.
If the forms are not filled out correctly they will be thrown out and you will have to start over again. I feel that the cost of the legal representation is worth every penny so I don't make a mistake and take even longer to get out of a bad marriage.

They sell divorce kits with all the paperwork at places like Rite Aid but are you sure you don't need an attorney?

Yes, I filed for divorce myself. Go down to your court house or family courts. There should be a help desk there or a directory. They have a pamplet there that will tell you the steps to go thru. Then you go and file them. You have to put it in the paper if you don't know where your husband is. You should be hearing from the courts after that. Good luck. Hope this helps you out.........Flo

Do you have children or property that both of you want? In some cases, you can represent yourself in court as long as your spouse gives their consent. Usually if children and real estate are a factor, you may need legal representation. Check out the laws in your state first.

You just need to get the necessary papers from the court, fill them in, then attend court as and when needed, just like a solicitor would except a solicitor would take time and be a bit complicated about it to justify the outrageous charges.
