This tree is a nut baring tree. The nuts look like cactus balls . It is not a chestnut tree. the spikes are really close togeather and very sharp.

Could it be a sweetgum? We have several in our front yard, they drop green spiny balls all over the place. (very annoying!)

It really sounds like you are describing a chestnut tree. The nut is surrounded by a grenish cover with spikes

Are they round and with a stem, and about an inch in diameter and sort of look like a Christmas ornament but brown? Sounds like a Sweet Gum tree

you have a chestnut tree my friend, I come from detroit, and we have them there also.
