alpha male is a term used to describe the leading male in a pack society.
it can range from being the biggest/strongest, to being the best provider.
in modern society the term is often used negatively to describe aggressive dominant men, interestingly these males act this way to try and assert dominance, but the excessive effort implies the have not achieved their desired social status and therefore are not 'true' alphas.
we no longer live in small communities so the alpha cannot hope to be dominant in every single situation, there are simply too many competitors.
in reproductive terms the alpha male usually mates with the alpha female, a dominant female , who is considered the most suitable reproductive partner.

Alpha male originates from the hierachy of pack animals.It is a pyramid system where the 'genetically strongest member (mentally/physically) of a group assumes the dominant role of group leader. All other group members are subservient to the Alpha male.
The alpha male is otherwise known as Samuel L. Jackson as he's cool as Fcuk. Nuff said.

Someone who is the natural leader of a group situation. I wouldn't define it as someone who "needs" to be in charge or tries to be in charge or postures and acts tough-- those are wannabe alpha males. Usually it's someone with a naturally commanding presence that other people defer to.

The alpha male is the male head of the family.
the rest of the family revolves around him and he holds the family together.
The concept of alpha male has lost it's significance in europe because of the closing gap of the equality of sexes.
If you are in africa or asia it has more meaning.
