A lot depends on what walls are between the wireless radio/router and the PC with the wireless nic. If you mount a a WiFi on top of a street lamp pole it wound be many hundreds of meters for someone with a laptop outside. But in a house - the signal can attenuate just a few rooms away depending on construction. Our lathe and plaster with the chickenwire in the middle walls seem to significantly reduce range.

About 200m for a wide-open spaces, drastically shorter for houses, this is by WiFi specification. 11a is ridicuously short-ranged to a room.
