i recently moved from North Carolina and there was this place called Lumberton North Carolina....i'm not from Lumberton but lived about an hour away from it....there were these people that look puerto rican that call themselves Lumbee Indians....everyone used to tell me that they weren't really a tribe of Indians but they just called themselves that and were actually a long time ancestry of black and spanish mix settlers....they got denied National Name Citizenship or whatever it's called to claim themselves as real Indians....has anyone ever heard about these Indians? They say they are the largest tribe in all of the South....i don't think they are real indians but they will fight you if you tell them they aren't Native American....any info would be appreciated from any "real" Native Americans....thanks....

In my humble opinion, they are not a real tribe. First of all, they are not federally recognized, which is the first qualifier. There has to be some controls otherwise you could go an establish a tribe and who would question you.

From a practical standpoint, the existing tribes would be faced with competing with the newly recognized tribes, fighting over the small crumbs we already receive from the government. The right to receive free health care and other services from the goverment is another discussion (afterall, we did lose out on the big land grab since 1492...)

Ancestors of the present-day Lumbee were first recognized by the State of North Carolina in 1885 as Croatan Indians, and have been requesting benefits from the federal government since 1888. In 1956, the House of Representatives passed a bill, HR 4656, better known as the Lumbee Act, which recognized the Lumbee as a Native American tribe. The Lumbee Act denied the federal aid that comes with full status as a federally-recognized tribe.

First off we are Native American! I dare any of you to go to Lumberton,NC and say they aren't. The main reason Lumbees didn't get recognized as quick as other tribes because the cherokee(white mans indian) help hold us back. With the help of their old rich *** white men helping them get their casinos up and running. If Lumbees were recognized federally as well cherokees would lose some of their benefits. That also means the white old rich **** heads lose money. We are recognized tribe and we have 50,000 in enrollment. Thats not including who hasn't got their tribal card. So yes we are Native Americans made up of two different tribes. Research before saying ignorant ****!

It seems so much of if the Lumbee are real natives dependents on matters of opinion rather then fact. DNA could very easily reveal if they do have native american heritage. They do sincerely seem to believe they are and sound like they have long been persecuted. I am not an authority on the subject and cannot offer any informed opinion, but I hope they are.

The answer to your question is yes and no. I'm partially Lumbee and we are recognized by the state of North Carolina as a Native American tribe. Lumbees are not purely Native American though. Lumbees, nowadays, are Croatan, Cherokee, African American, English, Scottish, and/or Irish. No one wants to consider us to be Native Americans because of our high concentration of mixed blood. But don't get it wrong, we are Natives just not full blooded natives.

Federal recognition does not determine whether a people are Indians or not. The Catawba Indians of South Carolina have only state recognition and no federal recognition, and yet they look every bit like Indians. They are on a state reservation, not a federal reservation. Also, the Lumbee do not have any casinos. Since they have no federal reservation, they cannot do that. That is the Cherokee that you are thinking of. They are on a federal reservation. That means they are not subject to the laws of North Carolina. They are only subject the laws of the federal government, which does not have laws against.gambling--hence their casino. The state recognized cannot do those things.
P.S. I am part Catawba.

I Lived in Lumberton for 9 years. I have Lumbee friends. As well as dated some. My friends some which are Lumbee have said that they are not real indians. When english settlers came thru Pembroke and surrounding areas alot of them were raped. You can tell they have some indian in them because of hair and some have darker tones and jet black hair. Some have whiter skin with mixed type hair. A good person to research is Henry Berry Lowrie. The Pow Wow they have every summer draws a lot of people down to Pembroke. You also get to see different cultural things they have to offer.

The Lumbees are from coastal regions of the Carolinas. The Cherokees are in the mountains (Smokies) and run casinos. the lumbees are known for their drywall work these days. I've worked with many of them on construction worksites.
