As far as I know(I'm no expert) it is not an insect, but a Arachnid. The genus family that spiders belong to, but as far as what kind of spider you might have building a web, I'm unsure. Are you positive that it is a web? some caterpillars make a lot of thready byproduct as well.

If the web is enclosed like a cocoon and you can see worms, they're tent caterpillars. Remove and burn them ASAP, as they can kill the tree!
