Vast family tree, basically. I've got so many famous people in my line, it isn't even funny anymore. That's because the famous people lived, whereas their enemies did not, and thus bred. Especially with royalty, because countries kept switching princesses. Spain would marry into France; England would marry someone from Germany; etc on and on.
Tracing to Leif, though, that's a tricky one. The Norse were very good about keeping up with who they were related to, but it was all oral, never written. So absolute proof you may never find. Unless they do with Leif what they did with Genghis Khan. They did a big DNA project, and found out that like 70% of people in Europe are related to him, because he had over a hundred children. And they, in turn, had dozens more. Unless you can get that for Leif, there is no absolute proof. Mind the ABSOLUTE. There are plenty of family lines that can trace back to and through Leif, far beyond. But that's going on the oral traditions of Vikings. Like the Welsh, they all end up be descended from some god or other. Trace a Welsh line, and you WILL get to Beli Mawr; they ALL get to there.

You will have a great deal of problem tracing back to Leif Ericson
seeing that he was born around 960AD and they did not keep records back then.
If you think it possible you start with yourself and go back to the generations that first arrived in the US and then find where they came from. That is when you have to search the original country of those ancestors and try to trace them in that country.
If like many researchers you get back to about 1538 then you have a slight problem as it was really on then when records where starting to be kept by all parish priests, especially in England. Unless your ancestors where a high ranking family there would be little to go on record wise to find them.
Its a long and hard trek if you want to find out the answers and I wish you the best of luck.

We're all related to historical figures, maybe not so famous as your Leif Erikson, but I think Descartes already figured that one out.

Sometimes you find out by accident when you are doing genealogical research. If you have any royal or noble ancestors, it's much easier to go farther back, since from the beginning much attention was paid to their bloodlines. I found out by accident that I'm descended from Henry II of England. I was able to go farther back, and I also discovered that I am also descended from a Viking, Rollo, who founded the duchy of Normandy.

A lot of it should be traceable, at least back to a few hundred years, but what you are asking is by word of mouth.

get the family tree maker program and start going through all your family's birth and death records. when you hit a dead end, try ancestry.com. and when that hits a dead end, you could get dna testing, but it's expensive, like 300 dollars or so.
