there are a series of books (8 in all) written by John Jakes which trace the important historical events occurring in the 13 colonies/united states pre 1877 as well as into the early 20th century. some of the titles are bastard, rebels, seekers, etc. thee books are all excellent reads and very accurate in their historical progression.

So many..... you didn't say whether you need fiction or nonfiction. Here are some novels:

Moby Dick
Billy Budd
The Scarlet Letter
Little Women
The Last of the Mohicans

Somebody already mentioned Uncle Tom's Cabin. Second that.

There's lots of great civil war era fiction out there...How about Uncle Tom's Cabin? It's not too long and it is pretty good.

i cannot give you titles. but i can give you a way to find them? is that okay?

well, look up major events that happened in history up to 1877. then you type in those events at barnesandnoble.com, and i guarantee, they will have some books!

hope this helps?

Man, that's not going to be easy. Have you asked in some libraries? Some librarians might know.
